This is the first Tower Defense game I have ever bought and played, Im pretty addicted right now. Love the variety of weapons, the graphics are sweet, the landscapes not bad, levels are challenging--they could maybe change maps for more diversity in environment but this is worth the money. Easy. Nice job!
In my opinion there are only 2 tower defense games that are absolutely essential on the Mac App Store, IBomber Defense & Sentinel 3. IBomber is the standard for tower defense games, with its WWII setting, and most TD games are basically a clone of this type of game except for rare exceptions like Sentinel 3. Sentinel 3 holds its own with its upgradable towers, unlockable weapons, and killer enemy waves; not to mention its amazing graphics, sound, and UI. The additions of a Commander (which makes you feel like much more a part of the action) and multiple gates to defend (which adds multiple levels of strategy to the game, with the new need of a possible fallback position) are what makes this game truely special. Though the Commader is provided to you from the start there are a TON of upgrades you can earn for him including weapons, new abilities, and his individual stats (health, weapons range, strength, firepower). The campagn consists of 20 levels with 4 modes of difficulty, so youll need those upgrades, and has a ton of replay value; not to mention the Classic mode (which is kind of like a challenge mode with set weapons and powers for different maps) and of course, Endless mode for all 16 maps. For 3 bucks this game is a steal, for the high quality of its gameplay/design and quantity of content its also one of the best games Ive bought on the Mac App Store.
While I have played this game for a couple hours so have certainly got my $1 worth, I cant say Im all that impressed by it. The game uses the same weapons and ideas that youd expect from most TD games: slow turret, splash cannon, air turret, flamethrower, etc. What they added which sort of makes things out of balance is this gun called beam energy. It does insane amounts of damage, and attacks air and ground. What this means is that even on the psycho difficulty, you end up just sitting back while the waves come. The levels start to get easier as you add more beam energy. Around level 12, you have unlocked enough weapons that the game can no longer offer any challenge. Also, the booster gun seems to be extremely underpowered, and is typically not worth the cost. Dear developer: Continue to think of more innovative weapons/ ways to deal with the enemy. I like how you have incorporated the commander, but there are a couple issues: the commander comes back after he dies so quickly that I have no motivation to upgrade his health. Also, the $5 factory bonus seems to be a strange little source of income. It doesnt really make much difference and I would eliminate it. I would also like more detail on how the booster effects range and firing speed as well as the commander aura. In the end, the strategy I end up using is getting your total amount of money high enough to the power where the 5% interest bonus amounts to $1000+. Then you just sit back and let the money rake in. On that last game, I managed to get to $30,000,000. This brings up another problem. On the endless mode, once you have filled every square inch of the map there is no longer a way to spend money or really any strategy left. You end up just sitting back and watching the screen for an hour. I would also like a bit more than a single soundtrack, as it gets old after several hours. Heres an idea: be able to spend money to upgrade the barrier strength, or maybe the barrier guns. It would be cool to upgrade your castle like castle defense with different guns etc. How about using a square for mining instead of the repair drone dynamic? This might make the factory bonus make more sense…. What else… the levels dont really offer much variety as the paths dont really seem to affect my strategy. Maybe vary the available cannon placement more, like level 19 where you cant place turrets next to barrier. Or change the enemies to be specific to the level. Oh, it would be great to offer achievements! I felt like when I figured out the interest trick I should have had some acknowledgement maker a Banker Achievement. Also, maybe when first using the massive weapon, maybe Lord of Destruction or something. It would be cool when I reached $1 million dollars. Maybe an achievement for being really thrifty for 20 waves or something. Oh, using a lot of the line pink guns makes for a pretty cool disco style light show, that would be a cool achievement… I dont know, just brainstorm some things.
Passed the last level on easy and medium. It takes over an hour to play the last level by itself. Best value for money game ever.
This is such a great game. Its a shame it doesnt have more reviews and ratings. It could easily be in the top 10!!!
Well-done game; very stable. If you like the Tower Defense genre you will enjoy this. Its a solid traditional TD with a light dose of RPG. The "Commander" is a great innovation, as it gives you something to do during the inevitable parts of any TD where you are basically waiting for the money to roll in so you can build. The only negative thing Ive come across is that the developer has not ported the add-on packs (which have more maps and weapon types) . It sounds like theyd consider doing so if they had strong Mac sales, though.
After installing this game I started it up only to be confronted with a totally black screen. At least ⌘-Q worked. Wrote to Origin8 about a week ago but still no response. Looks like it would be a fun game; if it worked :(
There are only three kinds of bad guys. They dont even seem to come in combination waves. They are badly animated. The game is repetitious, low-quality, and unimaginative. I just wasted three bucks, oh well.
The aspect ratio for the game is 16:10, however Im useing a Macbook Air 11" which is 16:9, the resulting game is squashed into the same screen area resulting in everything being vertically squashed by an inch. Its very annoying, plus there seems no way to change the resolution or aspect ratio inside the game itself. I have never had this problem with PC games, as they always allow you to change the resolution to the size of your screen. Not this game. Sometimes the game will zoom in to show you things, but then give you no way to zoom back out, as you an imagine, this becomes very frustrating as well, forcing you to scroll over to see if there are enemies or not. Its a good game, but if you have a Macbook Air 11" I reccomend that you DO NOT BUY this game. Its NOT MADE FOR YOUR MAC.
Macbook Pro - Theres no zoom functionality. So the campaign maps have these little dialog things that chatter away at you, and then to draw your attention to something they zoom in really close. Now theres no way to zoom out to see the whole map. It is unplayable. I want a refund.
I first enjoyed Sentinel 2 on iPod touch and iPhone. Thought about trying Sentinel 3 for iPhone at $3, but then I saw it for the Mac for only $2! Totally worth the price. Game plays on my late ’09 MacBook no problem. Smooth, hi detail. No glitches. Nice graphics. Cool music. Tons of baddies. And lots of lasers. Gameplay: a little different from Sentinel 2, but very good. Campaign mode lets you earn more weapons. Also earn upgrades for your mech warrior dude. Pretty cool. Strategy on par with Sentinel 2. Several more maps and unlocks to go. Looking forward to Sentinel 4.
graphics are lame… game play is boring - running this on a 13” macbook pro w/retina
Biggest design flaw that ruined replay for me was that you had no way to look at completed levels and see the highest difficultry you’ve won. Silly to miss such a simple and necessary information display. The game has an unfinished feel. For fans of TD games, its worth playing through, but don’t expect too much.
